Run-D.M.C., Metallica nominated for Rock Hall
The Associated Press
3:48 PM EST September 22, 2008
Run-D.M.C. could "Walk This Way" into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The 1980s rap act, along with Metallica and the Stooges, are among the
nine nominees for next year's hall of fame class, the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame Foundation announced Monday.
Man, message boards everywhere are lighting up like fuck over this.
It's WCW 2000 all over again.
"Rap is C-RAP!"
"How does RUN-DMC get in before RUSH?!?!?!?"
"Just rename the POP music hall of fame..."
I will agree with one thing, though: it's criminal that Stevie Ray
Vaughn isn't even on the BALLOT.
Jason "Cleveland...sheesh..." Todd
Run DMC deserves to be in there given how influential they were. SRV?
Not at all.
Hey, he was extremely influential in spawning a horde of soundalike
clones in his wake who couldn't sell one-tenth the number of units he moved!

That was troll bait, right? There's no way you believe that, let alone
can justify it, right?
In the realm of mainstream rock (or blues-rock, I guess, already a tired
and safe genre when SRV came to national attention), what do you think
SRV influenced that was significant. I'm not saying a) that he wasn't a
great player, b) didn't make decent records or c) didn't earn a spot in
the HOF, and I don't think c) was specifically what Stefan was saying (I
don't know how he feels about a or b), I think he was saying his
positive influence on whatever followed was minimal. Compared to, say,
Run-DMC, I would agree with that. Agree / disagree?

Here's what I've said many times in the past: The RRHOF is basically
kind of like a High School. Or perhaps more appropriately, a
collection of cliques within said high school. There's the Teachers,
(Elvis, Beatles, James Brown) Jocks, (Zeppelin, Hendrix, Skynrd)
Cheerleaders (The Supremes, Madonna), the tortured kids who write
poetry in the margins of their notebook all day, (REM, Talking Heads,
Patti Smith) and the hipster kids who are on top of every cultural
trend before anybody else (Elvis Costello, Blondie, Prince).
And then there's the Audio Visual Team (Genesis, Yes, King Crimson,
etc) and the Stoners, (Kiss, Rush, Motorhead) who apparently NEVER
get invited to any of the cool parties...
.

.

Jason "...and there's a lot of overlap between the A/V squad and the
stoners" Todd
I quite enjoy this series of analogies.

Oh c'mon, Rush is totally in the AV club, not the stoners!

probably both. They were in the AV club trying to learn how to make Sci-Fi
movies but would smoke cigarretes across from the school in their jean
jackets at lunch-time yelling "conform or be cast out!".

I guess it's only fair since he was a spawned soundalike of Hendrix. And
one who butchered two Hendrix covers to boot...
